European Parliament approved temporary measures to liberalize trade with Armenia

On Tuesday, the European Parliament approved the European Commission's proposal to introduce temporary measures to liberalize trade for products of Armenian origin.
YEREVAN, September 15. /ARKA/. On Tuesday, the European Parliament approved the European Commission's proposal to introduce temporary measures to liberalize trade for products of Armenian origin.
During the vote at the plenary session, which is taking place from September 14-17 in Strasbourg, 583 MEPs voted in favor of the proposal, 49 voted against, and 39 abstained.
Armenia's Ambassador to the EU, Tigran Balayan, called the decision another important step in the Armenia-EU partnership.
Earlier, the EU Council supported without amendment the European Commission's proposal to introduce temporary trade measures for Armenian products.
The measure provides for a temporary suspension of import duties on a wide range of goods of Armenian origin, including certain agricultural products subject to tariff quotas. According to the EU Council, the measures will allow for the liberalization of approximately 80% of Armenia's exports to the European Union.
The preferential treatment will be in effect for two years from the entry into force of the relevant regulation. It also provides for safeguards for the EU market in the event of a negative impact of imports on European producers.
After the formal adoption of the position by the European Parliament, the document must be approved by the EU Council. The regulation will enter into force the day after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
