New head of Russian border guards in Armenia appointed

Major-General Anatoly Mikheyev, who has replaced Vyacheslav Biryukov as commander of Russian border guards in Armenia and deputy chief of Russian border guards Nikolay Kozik were received today by Armenia's president Serzh Sargsyan.

YEREVAN, September 3. / ARKA /. Major-General Anatoly Mikheyev, who has replaced Vyacheslav Biryukov as commander of Russian border guards in Armenia and deputy chief of Russian border guards Nikolay Kozik were received today by Armenia's president Serzh Sargsyan.
Sargsyan's press office said Colonel-General Kozik presented the new head of Russian border guards in Armenia to the president.
Sargsyan congratulated Major- General Mikheyev on the new appointment, wishing him success and assured that the Armenian authorities are ready when necessary to assist him during the entire period of his service in Armenia.
Stressing that the strategic and allied relations between Armenia and Russia include virtually all areas of mutually beneficial cooperation, the president stressed the importance of close cooperation between the border troops of the two countries.
During the meeting the sides spoke about joint activities of Armenian and Russian border troops to ensure the safety and security of state borders.
The Russian Border Department in Armenia protects Armenia’s external border with Iran (45 km) and Turkey (330) in line with an agreement signed in 1992. Russian border guards (about 4,500 troops) are deployed in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat and Meghri. -0-
