Taron Margaryan took the oath of Yerevan Mayor office on Tuesday.
YEREVAN, June 11./ARKA/. Taron Margaryan took the oath of Yerevan Mayor office on Tuesday.
The inauguration was attended by President Serzh Sargsyan, Catholicos of All Armenian Karekin II , Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, members of the Council of Elders, ministers and deputies, Novosti-Armenia reported.
“Fulfilling my responsibilities, I promise to adhere to the Constitution of Armenia, laws and decision of the Yerevan Council of Elders, serve at my best and contribute honestly to the prosperity of Yerevan and the residents,” Margaryan said at his inauguration.
Upon the inauguration, honorary citizen of Yerevan, famous Armenian composer and conductor Martin Vartazaryan handed in to Margaryan a symbol of Mayor’s power - chain breastplate.
Yerevan Council of Elders election was held on May 5 at 464 polling stations in 12 administrative districts of the capital. The ruling Republican Party gained 42 seats in the Council of Elders, Prosperous Armenia Party-17, and “Hello, Yerevan!” bloc -6.
The Council of Elders is made up of 65 members who are elected through party lists. If a party or a bloc gains 50% of the vote, the top candidate of the list automatically becomes Yerevan Mayor. Otherwise, Mayor will be elected by the Council members. -0-
