ARTASHAT, October 6. /ARKA/. Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian travelled today to Artashat, a town 40 km south of Yerevan, to attend the opening of Regional College, which was renovated within the framework of a 30 million euro assistance of the European Union for rehabilitation of the country’s vocational schools.

The college was founded in 1977 and was called Technical School #4. The government decided March 3, 2011 to rename it Regional College. The building was fully renovated and refurbished with new equipment, laboratories and classrooms. The Regional College trains students on six specialties, including agriculture and medicine.

ARKA correspondent reporting from Artashat quoted education and science minister Armen Ashotian as saying that the opening of the Regional College starts the process of resumption of vocational schools.

"These colleges should contribute to the replenishment of labor market. For many years this area has been undervalued in Armenia, but in the last couple of years with the assistance of the EU we have achieved progress here," the minister said.

For his part, head of European Commission’s delegation to Armenia, Raul de Lutzenberger said that the program provides for reopening of 13 such regional colleges in each region and two in Yerevan.

"We hope that these colleges will become regional centers of economic development", he said. -0-
