50 cases of metapneumovirus reported in Armenia in 2024: Symptoms and prevention

YEREVAN, January 7. /ARKA/. From January to April 2024, 50 cases of metapneumovirus were detected in Armenia, according to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Armenia.

In 2023, 10 cases were reported.

"Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an acute respiratory infection that is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets and, less frequently, through contact with household objects," the statement said.

The symptoms are similar to those of other acute respiratory infections:

  • fever
  • cough
  • runny nose
  • difficulty breathing
  • headache.

To prevent acute respiratory infections, including metapneumovirus, the Ministry of Health of Armenia advises:

  • Regularly and thoroughly wash hands with soap, especially after visiting public places and before eating.
  • Avoid close contact with people who show symptoms of respiratory infections.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces both at home and at work.
  • Do not touch your face with dirty hands.
  • Regularly ventilate rooms.
  • Get a seasonal flu vaccine.

"If you notice symptoms typical of an acute respiratory infection, follow proper cough etiquette. In particular, wear medical masks and change them every 4 hours, stay home, and seek medical attention as soon as possible," the National Center advised.

Earlier, it was reported that there is a new outbreak of the virus in China. The National Health Commission of China announced the spread of human metapneumovirus, which most often affects children under 14 years old.
