YEREVAN, August 15. / ARKA /. Hakob Injigulian, an Armenian army soldier, captured by Azerbaijani troops near Nagorno-Karabakh last week, will face no prosecution at home, a spokesman for the defense ministry said.
Armenia’s defense ministry said the Injighulian accidentally strayed into Azerbaijani-controlled territory. However, interviewed by Azerbaijani ANS TV Injighulian said he deliberately surrendered to the Azerbaijani army after being punched by the commander of his unit in a bitter dispute. The Armenian defense ministry condemned the interview as a gross violation of international conventions on treatment of prisoners of war saying he was forced to present a false version of events.
Artsrun Hovannisian, the ministry spokesman, said military prosecutors had opened a criminal case under part one of Article 365 (violation of the rules of combat duty or military service). He said a preliminary investigation suggests that Injigulain’s actions constitute no crime. -0-
