The National Assembly of Armenia is now discussing amendments to the alternative military service law, which imply extension of deadlines for submission of applications for doing alternative military service.

YEREVAN, May 14. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia is now discussing amendments to the alternative military service law, which imply extension of deadlines for submission of applications for doing alternative military service.
Deputy Justice Minister Grikor Muradyan said that the amendment was prompted by the necessity to adjust the deadlines to the terms of universities’ entrance exams.
The thing is that before transition to a 12-year education males graduated secondary schools at the age of 17 and had one year before being called up. Now they end school at 18, which is the conscription age.
The deadlines are postponed from May to February and from October to August to give them a chance to try to get enrolled in university. If they fail they can apply for alternative military service.
Muradyan also said that every year some 100 citizens apply for doing alternative service because of religious reasons.
He said the alterative service commission satisfies most of applicants. -0----
