YEREVAN, July 13. /ARKA/. Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan, at an extraordinary government meeting held Monday morning, presented a report on escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the Tavush region.

"Yesterday at 12:30 a UAZ car is approaching one of our positions, and for unknown reasons, the servicemen leave the car and begin to move to our positions. I repeat and it is very important that everyone knows that the position is on the territory of Armenia directly on the border," he said.

The minister noted that since the movements were unexpected for the Armenian military, they, given the likelihood that the Azerbaijani military could get lost, were ordered to call on the enemy to leave the territory, which was done.

"After leaving the car, Azerbaijani soldiers return to their positions, after which the shelling of the Armenian position with a 82-mm mortar begins, as well as the movement of military units in this direction, which was suppressed by artillery fire and related actions," Tonoyan said.

The minister said that the enemy retreated, having suffered losses.

“Until now, shelling has been periodically re-started, every 15-25 minutes, using artillery of various calibers. The break was at night from 3:30 to 5:30. The artillery shelling are detected and suppressed by sniper fire, resulting in significant losses to the enemy. Our armed forces continue to guard the border, the operational situation is completely controllable," he said.

To the prime minister’s question about whether it is possible that all these actions were taken in order to return the car, Tonoyan replied that if there was such a desire, they somehow contacted and would reach an agreement to return a car.

"Artillery fire was immediately opened," the minister said.

According to the ministry of defense of Armenia, there are no casualties on the Armenian side, however, two policemen were slightly injured while on combat duty. -0-
