Armenian truck driver sentenced in Russia may be repatriated to serve his term in Armenia
YEREVAN, December 28, / ARKA /.  Hrachya Harutyunyan, an Armenian truck driver, who was involved in a bus crash near Moscow in 2013 summer that left 18 people dead and 40 others injured, and sentenced by a Russian court to 6 years and 9 months in prison, may be repatriated to Armenia to serve his prison term in homeland, justice minister Arpine Hovhannisyan told a news conference today.

She said Hrachya Harutyunyan had appealed to Armenian justice ministry with a request to serve his sentence in Armenia. She added that the Armenian ministry conveyed the request to Russian peers. The minister explained that repatriation is quite a lengthy process and can take several months. "Nevertheless, we hope that Harutyunyan will be repatriated in 2016", - she added.

According to Russian news reports, on July 13, 2013 the gravel-loaded truck driven by Hrachya Harutyunyan collided with a packed commuter bus outside the Russian capital. During the trial Harutyunyan pleaded guilty to traffic violation that led to one of the biggest accidents in the Moscow region.

The investigation revealed that the accident resulted from poor maintenance of the truck resulting in a brake malfunction. Harutyunyan, according to investigators, was to know about it.

The prison term is the longest for people accused of road accidents killing more than two persons, if the perpetrator at the time of the accident was sober. -0-
