Government to consolidate communities in larger administrative unions
YEREVAN, June 9. /ARKA/. An extraordinary session of the Armenian parliament has passed in the second and final reading a string of amendments to the law on administrative and territorial division and to a number of related laws that woill turn 328 villages into 34 communities.

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations Vache Terteryan said two years ago the government  had already consolidated 48 small communities into 18 larger administrative unions, which resulted in a more efficient management. He said this in mind the government decided to extend the community enlargement policy, which is expected to reduce administrative costs and increase the region's own revenues.

According to him, after enlargement new elections will be held to elect new community heads. Then community councils of elders will be elected.

In his words, the community enlargement will allow formation of a full-fledged system of local self-government bodies, as international experience indicates, as well as help solve promptly all problems of the communities.

In addition, according to the deputy minister, enlargement will increase control over allocated budget funds, as well as ensure a more effective use of the opportunities and potential of communities. --0--
