YEREVAN, March 13. /ARKA/. If tough preventive measures are not taken, the number of coronavirus carriers in Armenia may exceed the capacity of the country's healthcare system, the consulting company EV Consulting says in its statement issued on Friday.

The company says that Armenia has 12,153 hospital beds - 41 beds per 10,000 inhabitants, and in the infectious diseases departments - 2.1 beds per 10,000 people - only 624 beds. The annual occupancy of beds in these departments is 65%, therefore, free beds are 217, on average.

“If the number of coronavirus cases in Armenia reaches the Italian population confirmed today, there will be 595 patients in Armenia. According to the latest available data, the hospitalization rate in China is about 15% and in Italy about 50%. If we assume that in Armenia will have a number between these two indicators, which means that about 200 people will be subject to hospitalization," the company says on its Facebook page.

According to EV Consulting experts, this means that the country will come close to a critical threshold if the number of beds is not increased. In addition, the availability of intensive care facilities will become more important.

"It is necessary to take sharp steps to avoid this scenario. In addition to preventive measures, these steps should include creating additional opportunities for the treatment of coronavirus, increasing the number of beds and intensive care units, expanding quarantine zones, and so on," the company said.

Eight cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Armenia. The first case was recorded on March 1. A -29-year-old Armenian citizen who was airlifted from Iran, tested positive for the virus. Then two Armenian citizens (45 and 27 years old) and a 51-year-old Italian citizen who returned from Italy were found to have coronavirus. On March 12, two new cases of coronavirus infection were recorded in residents of Ettchmiadzin who had previously been in contact with one of those infected. In total, 88 people are currently isolated.

According to the latest data, the number of people infected worldwide exceeds 136,000. In total, carriers of infection were found in 117 countries and territories (plus four per day). Outside of China, 1,440 people died (plus 310 per day) from coronavirus. The number of people who recovered from coronavirus infection worldwide, according to SCMP, exceeded 69 thousand people. -0---
