YEREVAN, August 1. /ARKA/. Armenian surgeries will start using the so-called minimally invasive surgery to treat patients with lung cancer, the chairman of the Armenian Society of Surgical Oncology Gagik Hambardzumyan told reporters on Tuesday.

This procedure is performed through tiny incisions instead of one large opening. Because the incisions are small, patients tend to have quicker recovery times and less discomfort than with conventional surgery — all with the same benefits.

"Today, laparoscopy in Armenia is used in surgeries of the abdominal cavity. Our goal is to use minimally invasive surgery in the fight against lung cancer," Hambardzumyan told journalists on the sidelines of a scientific conference on modern methods of surgical treatment of lung cancer in the Armenian capital city.

According to him,  the first steps are being taken now to introduce the minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of lung cancer in the country. As Hambardzumyan explained, the main goal of the conference in Yerevan is to present more advanced surgical methods for the treatment of lung cancer.

The conference is a joint initiative of the Armenian Society of Surgical Oncology and the National Center of Oncology, an affiliation of the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Austrian-American Union and with the support of the Association of Oncologists of Armenia. Among the participants of the conference are  the head of the department of thoracic surgery of the University Clinic of Salzburg (Austria) Huter Jorg and surgeon Michael Lechner. -0-
