YEREVAN, January 24. /ARKA/. The Office of Armenia’s Financial Ombudsperson has received 30,000 complaints since January 2009 and has helped citizens to receive about 1.5 billion drams worth compensation claims, the ombudswoman Piruz Sargsyan told reporters on Thursday.

According to her, some 27,000 complains were about poor work of financial organizations. She said more than 10 thousand complaints were processed and about 72.1% of them were resolved in favor of citizens.
This year, she said, the number of complaints against credit organizations has saw a significant increase .

She said thanks to the ongoing financial literacy programs, the people are now better aware of when they can apply to the office, although there are still aspects when the level of financial literacy remains low and many continue to sign documents without reading them.

She said also that of 2,959 complaints received for consideration in 2018, the bigger  part – 2,115 – were about poor operation of insurance companies, 662 – were about banks, 136 – about credit organizations, 42 – about  the Bureau of Motor Insurers, 3 – about  money transfer systems  and one about the credit bureau.

“When we started 10 years ago, it became clear that the society had a low level of financial literacy. We have worked throughout this period to increase the financial awareness of the population,” the financial ombudswoman said. As a result, people are aware of their rights and know that there are specialized organizations where they can seek assistance, she added.

She said financial literacy programs embrace also schoolchildren and students, who participate in interactive games, visit the Central Bank and take part in a specialized financial summer camp.

Armenia was the first among former Soviet republics to introduce the office of financial ombudsperson in 2009 January after the parliament passed a relevant law. . ($1 - AMD 485.18). --0--
