Regulator proposes to empower TV and Radio Commission to stop broadcasting foreign TV programs in case of information war

YEREVAN, April 8. /ARKA/. The Armenian regulator is not empowered to stop the broadcasting of foreign TV programs in case of information war against Armenia, the head of the TV and Radio Broadcasting Commission Tigran Hakobyan said today. He added that a set of proposals to solve this issue have been sent to the relevant ministry,
"In case foreign TV channels start a serious information war against Armenia, the regulatory body will not be able to use levers to stop broadcasting these TV programs in the country. We have submitted our proposals s and considerations on this issue to the Ministry of High Technology Industry, and we hope that this issue will be resolved," Hakobyan said at a Tuesday's session of the parliamentary committee on science, education, culture, diaspora, youth and sport issues.
According to him, in case of a positive decision, the Commission will have the right to suspend the broadcasting of these programs, get acquainted with the content and, if a violation of Armenian legislation is revealed, these TV programs may be closed.
The head of the Commission also announced plans to create a fund that will help TV companies both buy and produce socially useful content.
"The issue of its creation is already nearing completion, disagreements arise only because of the sources of its financing. The creation of the fund will contribute to the growth of cultural, sports and educational programs in commercial TV companies in Armenia," Hakobyan said. -0-
