YEREVAN, January 15. /ARKA/. Head of an Armenian polling center said today the authorities will have to impose quarantine if the situation with swine flu worsens.
Speaking to a news conference, Aharon Adibekyan, head of Sociometer polling center, called on the authorities to take drastic measures to fight the deadly disease unless the situation did not develop into a real epidemic.
"For imposing quarantine and declaring epidemic it is necessary to determine the degree of the threat. The authorities must not wait for thousands to fall ill to call it an epidemic. If the virus poses danger and there is a risk that it could spread to other countries, it is necessary to impose quarantine,’ Adibekyan said.
Health minister Armen Muradyan said yesterday there was no flu epidemic, saying also epidemic is a situation when the number of cases exceeds the norm by 4-5 times, while the rate in Armenia was 1.5 times higher the norm.
Adibekyan reminded today that authorities in Ukraine, where 25 people are said to have died of swine flu, have had imposed quarantine.
In the last 20 days the number of acute respiratory disease in Armenia has surged raising the death toll from swine flu to 13. As of January 14 morning, there were 948 people with acute respiratory diseases in local hospitals with 420 diagnosed with pneumonia, including 223 children and 38 pregnant women. -0-
