YEREVAN, July 28. / ARKA /. Public "green areas" in the Armenian capital city have grown by 30 hectares over the past 15 years to about 950 hectares, Avet Martirosyan, the head of a Yerevan municipality department in charge of environmental issues, told a news conference today.
"The main factor in the process of greening is the irrigation network, the length of which in Yerevan is about 350 km today,’ said Martirosyan.
According to him, the irrigation network in Yerevan has been extended by 30 km a year over the last 5-6 years along with major repair of the existing system. The bulk of irrigation water in Yerevan is pumped out from the river Hrazdan.
He said in spring four deep wells were built in the administrative districts of Avan-Arinj, Jrvezh and Shengavit which provide about 20% of irrigation water. Martirosyan said that in 2015 some 20,000 trees and bushes have been planted in the city
"The land in the capital is contaminated with heavy metals and therefore we must plant those tree species which are able to absorb heavy metals. Basically, they are ash, maple, oak and pine trees, which are easily adapted to our climatic conditions,’ said Martirosyan. -0-
