YEREVAN, February 4. /ARKA/. Some 8,500 people have been diagnosed with cancer in Armenia now, by 2000 more than in 2005, Rafael Sargsyan, the head of the department of general oncology at the National Center of Oncology, said today.

Speaking at a news conference, dedicated to World Cancer Day, he said the incidence of cancer is increasing from year to year in virtually all countries. According to him, 12.6 million new cancer cases were registered in 2015 and 7.5 million cancer-caused deaths. As for Armenia, he said the most frequent case among me is lung cancer.

"I should note that according to our research, more than 70% of lung cancer cases in Armenia are a direct result of smoking. Moreover, the mortality rate from lung cancer in Armenia is also quite high,’  he stressed.

The most common cancer  among women is breast cancer; however, the death rate from the disease is much lower than that from lung cancer.

Sargsyan also said that the highest incidence of cancers is registered in Shirak and Lori regions and the lowest in Yerevan and Gegharkunik region.

"It is difficult to say what is the reason. Development of cancer may have many causes, such as environment, genetics, lifestyle and so on," he added.

February 4th is marked as World Cancer Day. The campaign, which started in 2000, aims to promote research to cure and prevent the disease, improve treatment and raise awareness. This year's event, as well as those for 2017 and 2018, all share the same theme: "We can. I can." -0-
