The number of drug addicts in Armenia grows by 6% in one year, ministry of health says

The number of drug addicts in Armenia has grown by 6% in one year, the Ministry of Health said.

YEREVAN, June 26, /ARKA/. The number of drug addicts in Armenia has grown by 6% in one year, the Ministry of Health said. The figure was unveiled today on June 26, which is marked as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to the health Ministry, as of January 1, 2019, the number of registered drug addicts in Armenia increased by 6% compared with the previous year to 6,951 people, including 116 women. Of them, 2,552 were opium addicts, 4,394 - cannabinoid addicts and five were cocaine addicts.
About 64% of the registered drug addicts were 28-49 years old, 19.5% were 50-64 years old, 18% were 19-27 years old, 68 people were 65 years old and more, 11 people were 18 years old and five people were 16-17 years old.
In terms of drug prevalence, Yerevan ranked first (3,645 people or 52%), Armavir was second (805 people or 12%), and Kotayk region (685 people or 10%) was third.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime World Drug Report for 2019, approximately 35 million people across the world are estimated to suffer from drug use disorders for which they require access to treatment services.
The study reveals that worldwide use of opioids is rocketing, with the number of people using such drugs in 2017 reaching 53 million, which was 56% up on the previous year.
The UN said that opioids such as fentanyl and tramadol were responsible for some two thirds of the 585,000 people who lost their lives as a result of drug use in 2017.
Held every year since the passing a UN General Assembly resolution in 1987, the event is intended as an expression of participants’ determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. -0-
