YEREVAN, August 12. /ARKA/. A pilot program to replace lifts in high-rise apartment buildings in Yerevan will end before the end of the year, Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Hayk Sargsyan said to Arka news agency, adding that a total of 20 lifts will be replaced.

According to the Municipality, there are more than 4,400 lifts in Yerevan, most of which were installed back in 1956-1993 and need to be replaced, since their service life is 25 years.  In 2007-2008 the Municipality released 3 billion drams for repair of 2,464 lifts and installment of 35 new ones.

According to the deputy mayor, the problem requires a comprehensive solution, but the cost of one lift varies between  $15-$17 thousand, and many residents do not have such funds to replace their lifts.

Sargsyan said in view of  the social component of the problem and the threat to the life and health of citizens, the Yerevan Municipality initiated a large-scale program for the replacement of 3,500 lifts.

He said the program had been approved by the government, and an inter-agency working group has been created to tackle the problem. Sargsyan said the cost of the program is estimated at 32 billion drams, as much as the municipality collects as its own revenue. This is why the

government will attract sovereign credit to finance the program. According to preliminary data, it will take 4 years to replace all 3,500 lifts. ($ 1 - 476.13 drams). --0—
