YEREVAN, December 27. /ARKA/. Russian Rusatom Service, a division of Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, has completed the delivery of the second block transformer for the Armenian nuclear power plant.
Earlier this month it had delivered the first of two turbo generators and a block transformer. In March 2014, the Armenian government decided to extend the plant’s service life because of the delay in building a new unit. The service life extension became possible due to Russia’s financial aid. It was to provide $270 million to Armenia as a loan and $30 million as a grant.
The transformers will be used to replace the outdated equipment and to increase the voltage and transmission of electrical energy supply to the power system. The equipment was manufactured by Zaporozhtransformator, the largest manufacturer of oil transformers and electric reactors in Europe and CIS.
The bloc transformer was transported by land to Chernomorsk port in Ukraine, then by sea to Georgian port of Poti and from there by land to Armenia. According to Armenian ministry of energy, the replacement will begin in 2018.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s but was closed following a devastating earthquake in 1988. One of its two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995. Armenian authorities said they will build a new nuclear power plant to replace the aging facility.
The new plant is supposed to operate at twice the capacity of the Soviet-constructed facility. The plant currently generates some 35 percent of Armenia's electricity. --0---
