YEREVAN, June 14, /ARKA/. Hakob Hakobian, a deputy chairman of Armenian Hotels Association, said to a Saturday news conference that the hotel occupancy rate in Yerevan in late summer and early autumn is 80-90 percent.

According to him, the average hotel occupancy rate outside the capital city is 30-40% and 50-70% in Yerevan. Officially, he said, there are 130-140 hotels in Armenia and the average cost of a room is 60Euors per night, which ‘is not too expensive for foreign tourists.’

According to government data, the number of tourists visiting Armenia in the first quarter of 2010 rose by 9.4% year-on-year to 92,955 people. Overall, the number of foreign tourists visiting Armenia has risen by 12 times since 2000 to 575,000 in 2009.

Speaking at the same news conference, Robert Minasian, chairman of Armenian Travel Agencies Union, said only 15-20% of foreign tourists who visited Armenia last year, were brought here by travel agencies.
‘Armenia has not yet developed into a country that may be attractive for foreign tourists. We have not yet built an image of a tourist friendly, safe country,’ he said.

According to him, Armenian travel agencies should shift from trying to attract tourists from former Soviet countries to European countries. -0-
