YEREVAN, August 26. / ARKA /. The head of the Union of Armenian Architects slammed today the chief Yerevan architect and the Urban Council of the Yerevan municipality for approving the construction of a hotel near Republican Square in downtown Yerevan.
Speaking at a news conference, Mkrtich Minasian, said the idea to build a hotel in the heart of the capital was ill-conceived.
On August 18 the government decided to allow the mayor of the capital to allot land for the construction of the hotel on a site close to Republic Square subway station.
"It is my deep conviction that to build a hotel on that site is an ill-conceived decision. The area will not be enough for construction of four-star hotel," Minasyan said.
He said there is not room even for a parking lot.
"This proposal is the result of insufficient professional investigation," he said, adding that in the case of support from colleagues he is willing to ask the government to revoke the decision.
The proposal to build an 8–storey hotel was designed in 2010 by architect Narek Sargsyan, now the chief architect of the country. The planned hotel (it must be at least four-star hotel) will have receptions and meetings rooms, gyms, game rooms, restaurants and cafes. -0-
