More than 1.1 million tourists visited Armenia in 9 months

More than 1.1 million foreign tourists visited Armenia in the first nine months of 2017, the head of the State Tourism Committee Zarmine Zeituntsyan announced today, saying that the number was by 21% more than that in the same period of 2016.

YEREVAN, December 19. /ARKA/. More than 1.1 million foreign tourists visited Armenia in the first nine months of 2017, the head of the State Tourism Committee Zarmine Zeituntsyan announced today, saying that the number was by 21% more than that in the same period of 2016.
‘This is a good result for us, but this is not the limit, as we are able to receive more tourists," Zeituntsyan said at a press conference.
The bulk of foreign tourists visiting Armenia are from Russia, Georgia, Iran, the United States and Ukraine. However, India became the leader in terms of the number of tourists visiting the country.
"The growth in the number of tourists visiting our country was facilitated both by the simplification of the visa regime with a number of countries and by the facilitation of border control," Zeituntsyan added.
According to her, the government’s contribution to the development of tourism this year was $200,000, however the budget of the committee for the next year will double.
"We are working to increase the country's recognition in the world, and our activity is aimed at institutional reforms, international cooperation and diversification of markets," Zeituntsyan said.
According to the National Statistical Service, in 2016, some 1,259,657 tourists visited Armenia, an increase of 5.7% over 2015. -0-
