YEREVAN, August 7. /ARKA/. Number of tourist arrivals in Armenia has considerably gone up, due to events held this year to popularize the country, head of “Armenia Travel +M” tour agency Marina Kprelyan told a press conference on Thursday.
According to the reports and expert estimates, 256,917 tourists arrived in Armenia in the second quarter of this year, which is a 1.8% increase compared to the same period of the last year.
A wide variety of events, including exhibitions, festivals, genocide centennial commemoration events and the current Pan-Armenian Games led to an unprecedented growth of tourist visits, Kprelyan said.
The head of the agency has not provided concrete data, but said the alleged 1 million of tourists per year is not exact and includes total number of people who visited Armenia over the period.
Not everyone arriving in Armenia is a tourist, and the calculation should be based on records from airports, hotels, banks, she said.
The expert also said Europe, including Germany, Austria, England and France, and Israel accounted for the highest share of tourist arrivals in Armenia this year. Number of tourists from Japan and USA has also increased, but is still curbed by lack of direct flights, she said.
Tourists from Armenia prefer first of all Georgia due to lower costs and geographical proximity. Armenians prefer also Greece, Spain and Italy, Kprelyan said.
According to the expert, Armenia is not well introduced in the world, and more pro-active efforts are needed to popularize the country in the world.
According to Georgia’s foreign ministry, 180,099 people arrived in Georgia from Armenia in July, an 11.9% increase from the last year. –0--
