YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Armenia's Civil Aviation Committee (CAC) announced today the completion of a project that was designed to modernize the Syunik airport in the southern town of Kapan. It said the modernization is part of a program to develop Armenia's small plane aviation.

CAC said it assisted the airport to repair the artificial surface of its runway, build new passenger complex fenced in accordance with international standards.

In accordance with international requirements and the legislation of Armenia, the CAC carried out the certification procedure for the airport's airfield. The certificate was issued by the decision of the head of the Civil Aviation Committee dated November 18, 2020.

The flights from Kapan to the capital Yerevan are to be operated by  L-410 aircraft with a capacity of up to 19 passenger seats.

The CAC said the new take-off and landing schemes enable aircraft to avoid using the airspace of the neighboring Azerbaijan.

The L 410 Turbolet is a multipurpose twin-engine aircraft for domestic airlines. It is designed for operation on unprepared unpaved, grassy and  snowy fields, as well as on airfields with short runways. It can carry up to 19 passengers or 1,800 kg of cargo over a distance of up to 1,500 km.

In July 2020, the head of the Civil Aviation Committee Tatevik Revazyan announced that the Kapan airport would open later this year. Earlier it was reported that more than $2 million were spent on its reconstruction. The funds were invested by the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine and the Syunik Development and Investment Fund. -0-
