Iranian companies are ready to build railways and roads in Armenia

Iranian companies are ready to implement railway and road construction projects in Armenia, thus binding the rail network of Armenia to Iran's railways, said Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport of Iran Reza Pilpaye during the meeting with the ambassado
YEREVAN, April 29. /ARKA/. Iranian companies are ready to implement railway and road construction projects in Armenia, thus binding the rail network of Armenia to Iran's railways, said Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport of Iran Reza Pilpaye during the meeting with the ambassador of Armenia in Iran Grigor Arakelyan.

Reza Pilpaye said that communication with international transport corridors in the territories of neighbor countries, including Armenia, is one of the main policies of the Ministry of Roads and Transport of Iran.

According to him, the project of connection the railways of Iran and Armenia envisages the construction of railway section with a total length of about 540 km. On the territory of Armenia the road stretching 480 km will be constructed.

He assured that if the Armenian side will implement this project, Iran will construct 60-km road section for the connection of railways of both countries.

Reza Pilpaye said that in order to accelerate the implementation of rail and road projects, consortium is needed and the issue of such cooperation between the two countries can be considered at the upcoming meeting of joint Iranian-Armenian commission on economic-trade cooperation.

Arakelyan said that Iran and Armenia are connected with each other with border terminal Nurduz. Every year about 40 thousand trucks and busses cross the border. Some products imported by Armenia are delivered by sea to the Iranian port

Bandar-e Abbas and from there they are delivered through the Iranian territory to Armenia.

On January 14, 2010 Government of Armenia approved the investment program on road construction North-South, framework financial agreement between Armenia and Asian Development Bank in the total amount of $500 million and agreement on the provision of the first tranche in the amount of $60 million for the construction of transport corridor North-South signed on September 15, 2009 and December 12, 2009 respectively.

Railway North-South (Iran-Armenia) will allow to use alternative route of transportation of energy resources and other goods, obtaining access to outside world. Currently, railway communications between Armenia and foreign countries are provided only through the territory of Georgia.

According to preliminary data, investments in railway construction Iran-Armenia will be $2 billion. The World Bank and Asian Development Bank are interested in the construction of the railway North-South. –0--
