YEREVAN, June 27. /ARKA/. Armenian Cheese company is planning to enlarge its export volumes this fall, Armenian Development Agency Director General Robert Harutyunyan said Monday in Novosti International Press Center.

“Armenian Cheese exported five tons of cheese to Russia in February, and we intend to continue exporting our cheese,” he said adding that if supply exceeds demand here in Armenia, greater volumes may be sent outside.

According to the Armenian Development Agency’s forecast, supply of cheese products may exceed demand by 10 to 20 percent.

Russia is the main market for Armenian cheese. Under preliminary arrangement, the Armenian Cheese company was set to export 120 to 140 tons of cheese in Sept-Oct 2010 to Russia and 80 tons to the United States. However, nothing like that happened, since cheese prices jumped in Armenia, and it was decided to refrain from exporting cheese and postpone these plans for 2011.

Armenia produces some 17,000 tons of cheese every year. Of them, only 200 to 400 tons are exported. Many of cheese varieties, such as suluguni, lori and chanakh, are Armenian or Caucasian.

The Armenian Cheese company was established by the Armenian Development Agency and the Union of Cheese Manufacturers in early 2010. -0-
