On September 1, the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) was restarted and connected to the Armenian unified power grid following the completion of the 2026 scheduled maintenance (SPM), according to the ANPP website.

It was previously reported that the unit was disconnected from the power grid on April 1 due to a major maintenance operation and the implementation of the ANPP life extension program. The work was scheduled to last approximately five months.
As noted in a statement from the ANPP on Thursday, the unit was launched in accordance with established technological procedures after the successful completion of the necessary checks and tests.
As part of the 2026 SPM, approximately 20 comprehensive measures were implemented aimed at increasing the reliability of the unit's main systems and equipment, extending their service life, and further enhancing safety.
During the repairs, scheduled maintenance, repairs, diagnostics, and inspections of the primary and auxiliary equipment were carried out.
At the same time, technical modernization programs aimed at ensuring the safe, stable, and efficient operation of the power unit continued.
The work planned for the 2026 planned maintenance was also carried out under the supervision of the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee of Armenia.
The second power unit of the Armenian NPP is currently operating normally. Its capacity is being gradually increased in accordance with established technological requirements, while maintaining safety and reliability requirements.
About the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan.
The plant is one of the main sources of electricity in the country, providing up to 40% of total generation. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to renew it for another 10 years.
The new nuclear power plant is planned to be built within 8-10 years. Various options are currently being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the United States, France, and South Korea is being studied. A preliminary feasibility study for the construction of a new 1,200 MW unit, developed by the Rosatom state corporation, is already under review by the Armenian side.
Earlier, Rosatom First Deputy Director General Kirill Komarov, responding to a question from the ARKA news agency, stated that the corporation could offer Armenia nuclear reactors with a capacity of 50 to 1,000 MW. He added that it is possible, in particular, to assemble a reactor of any capacity from 50 MW units.
