YEREVAN, December 2, /ARKA/. Eduard Sharmazanov, a spokesman for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, said Wednesday late evening that the party has nominated deputy parliament speaker Samvel Nikoyan for the post of parliament chairman.

Novosti Armenia news agency quoted him as saying that Nikoyan’s candidacy was suggested by president Serzh Sargsyan, the chairman of the party, at yesterday’s meeting of its governing board. Sharmazanov said he was nominated to the post of deputy parliament speaker. Both candidates were supported unanimously, according to him.

Previous parliament chairman, Hovik Abrahamian, resigned November 14 ‘to head the Republican Party’s central election office ahead of next May parliamentary elections.’ Sharmazanov will be replaced by Gagik Melikyan as secretary of the party’s parliamentary faction. The Republican Party controls 63 seats in the 131-member National Assembly. The prime minister and many of Cabinet members are also from this party. -0-
