YEREVAN, February 25. /ARKA/. On Saturday, Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, speaking at the police authorities’ meeting, called developments in the country a coup attempt.
Presidential press office told ARKA News Agency that the political situation and law enforcement agencies’ steps were discussed at the meeting.
He said that the developments in the country are motivated by an attempt to escalate tension artificially.
He place on record with regret that the culture of admitting own defeat, which is an important component of democracy, is not formed in Armenia yet.
The head of state said that the authorities will do whatever necessary to maintain stability and constitutional order in the country.
He gave appropriate instructions to law enforcement agencies.
Police high-ranking officials assured the president that the police will make every effort to keep things in order.
The opposition has staged a series of rallies and marches in the central part of Yerevan as protest against the recent presidential election’s results.
Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan, who is Republican Party leader, won the election by scoring 52.86% of votes. His rival, former Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosyan got 21.5%. --0---
