YEREVAN, May 18. /ARKA/. Ara Babloyan, an MP from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), was elected chairman of the National Assembly on Thursday. His only rival was Edmond Marukyan from the opposition bloc Yelk. Babloyan was elected by a vote of 88 to 12. The new Armenian parliament has 105 members. The 12 votes went to Marukyan.

Babloyan thanked the president and the ruling party for their confidence and promised to show maximum responsibility in this difficult period for the Armenian parliament. As a parliament speaker, Babloyan said he is going to put emphasis on three components- safety, health and education. 

"I will be guided by the fact that I have been elected by the people, and all my steps will proceed from the interests of the state and people," the newly elected speaker said.

In the April 2 polls the HHK received 58 seats, the Tsarukyan bloc- 31, Yelk has 9 seats and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutyun has 7 seats. The new National Assembly will have three vice-speakers, up from two, one of whom will represent the opposition. -0-
