YEREVAN, January 31. /ARKA/. Armen Sargsyan, whose candidature was recently put up by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia for presidential election in the National Assembly, said Tuesday that in 1997 he has had no conflict with the then defense minister Vazgen Sargsyan.
Earlier, Armenian media resources reported that Armen Sargsyan, who in 1997 was prime minister under the first president Levon Ter-Petrosuan’s rule, left his prime-ministerial seat because of a conflict with Vazgen Sargsyan.
In an interview with Shant TV, Armen Sargsyan said that he had not spoken about the then events for two decades, but now he understands that he has to reveal some details of his personal life, since he is offered to become president.
“In 1997, I had to quit office because of illness, a grave illness, and I had no conflict with Vazgen Sargsyan,” he said.
In his televised interview, Armen Sargsyan revealed true circumstances of his resignation.
“Jacques de Larosière, former finance minister of France, was the first who pressed me into undergoing medical examination, which showed that I was gravely ill,” he said.
“I told President Levon Ter-Petrosyan about that, and the president, along with Serzh Sargsyan [the then interior and national security minister - ARKA], Vazgen Sargsyan and Babken Ararktsyan [National Assembly speaker], insisted on my treatment.”
The presidential candidate also said that he had been seen off in the airport by Vazgen Sargsyan personally.
Had the treatment been delayed for one or two months, it would have led to irreparable consequences.
