Armenia's EU accession referendum is meaningless for now - Pashinyan
YEREVAN, June 2. /ARKA/. A referendum on Armenia's accession to the EU is meaningless without an official application, stated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"First, we must become a candidate or officially apply to the European Union for membership. Until that happens, there is no point in holding a referendum," Pashinyan said, answering questions from an Izvestia correspondent during an election campaign in the village of Tsovagyugh in the Gegharkunik region.

The Prime Minister noted that four Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states recently supported the idea of holding a referendum on Armenia's accession to the EU.

On May 29, 2026, the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia (EAEU members) issued a joint statement regarding Armenia's actions aimed at joining the European Union. The document speaks, in particular, of the "need to hold in the Republic of Armenia, as soon as possible, a national referendum on joining the European Union or continuing to be part of the Eurasian Economic Union."
