Armenia and Karabakh mark triple holidays
YEREVAN, May 9. /ARKA/. Armenia and the Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh) are celebrating today the Victory Day in the WW II, the liberation of Shushi, the second-largest town in Artsakh and the Day of the Creation of the Karabakh Defense Army.

On this day, the political and military leaderships of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh lay wreaths at monuments to the heroes of the WW II and the Karabakh liberation movement. Festive events are held throughout Armenia and Artsakh.

Armenia made a huge contribution to the victory over fascism. During World War II, the Armenian people sent 600,000 of their soldiers to the battle fronts, 300,000 from Armenia, 200,000 from other Soviet republics, and 100,000 joined the battle against fascism from other countries. More than 200 thousand of them were killed. For such a small country as Armenia, it was a colossal loss, comparable to the losses of the United States (300,000 people). Some 106 Armenians were awarded Hero of the Soviet Union medals.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the conflict in Karabakh translated into large-scale military operations. The turning point in the war was the liberation of Shushi, the second largest Karabakh town.

In May 1992, the Karabakh forces almost completed the liquidation of Azerbaijani firing points inside Nagorno-Karabakh and for the complete liberation it was required to dislodge the enemy from Shushi.
In early May, Karabakh self-defense forces planned and conducted a brilliant operation to liberate Shushi. It was completely liberated on May 9 – on the Victory Day in WW II.

That operation was of tremendous military-strategic and psychological significance. The self-defense forces of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic saved Stepanakert from the daily bombing, creating conditions for opening the overland route to Armenia.

A few days later, the Karabakh army liberated Lachin, suppressing the enemy's firing points. Thus, a direct link was established between Artsakh and Armenia. Later, May 9 was proclaimed the Day of Liberation of Shushi and the Day of the Creation of the Karabakh Army. -0-
