Yerevan welcomes the agreement between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry reached in Geneva on the Syrian issue, a spokesman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Tigran Balayan said.
YEREVAN, September 17. / ARKA /. Yerevan welcomes the agreement between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry reached in Geneva on the Syrian issue, a spokesman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Tigran Balayan said.
Sergei Lavrov and John Kerry, meeting on September 14 in Geneva agreed on a plan to bring Syrian chemical weapons under international control. The agreement is expected to be backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution that could allow for sanctions or other consequences if Syria fails to comply.
The first international inspection of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile is set for November, with destruction will begin next year.
"Armenia welcomes the proposals made on the basis of the agreement reached by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, which allow to destroy chemical weapons and to prevent their use in Syria, which may pave the way to finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis peacefully to end the suffering of the people of Syria and its integral part - tens of thousands of Syrian Armenians ," Balayan was quoted as saying. -0-
