YEREVAN, October 16. / ARKA /. A senior member of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) downplayed today media speculation that the umbrella organization may nominate other than ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosian as a candidate for next February presidential election.
‘The Armenian National Congress has one candidate and it is the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosian,”, Levon Zurabian, the HAK coordinator, said to Novosti-Armenia.
"No political party has proposed that we field a single candidate. HAK is considering the nomination of only one person – it is Levon Ter-Petrosian," he said in response to a question whether HAK may support the nomination of ex-foreign minister Vartan Oskanian from the Prosperous Armenia party as a single opposition candidate.
Zurabian said HAK did not consider nomination of a "reserve candidate" if Ter-Petrosdian refuses to run.
"We are fully focused on the nomination of Ter-Petrosian and are not considering alternative options,” he said.
Asked whether he had differences with other members of HAK considering nomination of a candidate, Zurabian said he had disagreements with many members of Congress, including, Levon Ter-Petrosian.
"The contradictions are the engine of progress. If we did not have contradictions, we would not be able to move forward," he said.
The Armenian National Congress, which was established in 2008, is headed by the first president of independent Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosian. It is a coalition of 18 political parties and organizations. In the National Assembly it controls seven seats. -0-
