YEREVAN, October 21. /ARKA/. The consulate general of the Islamic Republic of Iran was inaugurated today in the town of Kapan in Armenia's Syunik province that borders Iran.

The official ceremony was attended by Armenian and Iranian foreign ministers Ararat Mirzoyan and Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

"The Iranian government's decision to establish a consulate general in Kapan indicates the importance the Iranian government and the people attach to the millennia-old relations between Iran and Armenia," Ambassador Abdollahian said.

He noted the Iranian government's readiness to facilitate the opening of an Armenian consulate general in the Iranian city of Tabriz.

Ambassador Abdollahian said Iran considers the security of Armenia and the region its security.

"Our policy is to respect territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders," he stressed.

The minister noted that the Syunik region is one of the most important sections of the North-South corridor.

"We will do our best to ensure that this transit route, the transportation of goods and passengers along this direction develops," he said.

Armenian Minister Mirzoyan, in turn, said that the consulate general will raise to a higher level the special relations between the two countries and will stimulate bilateral cooperation and development of Armenian-Iranian ties.

"I am sure that necessary efforts will be made to deepen and strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation," he said.

The first Iranian consul general in Kapan is Morteza Abedin Varamin. -0-
