YEREVAN, January 29. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian praised today Russia for ‘playing an important role in maintaining stability and security in our region’. Nalbandian’s remarks came in response to journalists’ request to comment on the latest delivery of a batch of Russian weapons to Azerbaijan.
According to Nalbandian, Armenian authorities are doing everything necessary to maintain the military balance in the region by purchasing weapons from Moscow at preferential prices.
‘As a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group and as a major regional actor, Russia plays an important role in ensuring regional security," Nalbandian said to a news conference convened to present what his ministry did last year.
The Armenian government approved last October the signing of a $100 million defense loan agreement with Russia, under which Russia is to supply Armenia with modern weapons.
At the same time, Nalbandian stated that Armenia is doing its utmost in the framework of its partnership with Russia to enhance its defense capability.
"An updated agreement on the Russian military base in Armenia signed in 2010 notes that the Russian side will provide Armenia with new weapons, which is happening now," Nalbandian said.
The 102nd Russian military base is deployed in Armenia’s second largest town of Gyumri, near the border with Turkey. Under the agreement Russia will have its base in Armenia until 2044. -0-
