NA Vice Speaker: “Civil Contract” not concerned about power shift before 2026 elections

YEREVAN, April 15. /ARKA/. The ruling Civil Contract faction is not concerned that there could be a change of power before the next parliamentary elections in 2026. This was stated to journalists by Ruben Rubinyan, Vice Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly and Special Representative for negotiations with Turkey.
“In democratic countries, the people answer such questions [about a change of power] during elections. In 2026, the people will give their answer,” Rubinyan said, responding to a question about the possibility of a government change amid the current administration’s numerous failures.
He expressed confidence that the opposition would not be able to unite the public to bring about a change in government before the elections.
Rubinyan also said he is not concerned about the results of the recent elections in Gyumri and Parakar.
“In the 2021 elections in Gyumri, Civil Contract received about 20% of the vote and came in second. In the latest elections, we came in first with 36%. The party acknowledges that we failed to secure a majority, but in 2026 we will do everything possible to win the majority of votes,” Rubinyan stated.
When asked whether the issue of de-occupation of Shushi and Hadrut would be included in Civil Contract’s campaign platform for the parliamentary elections, the Vice Speaker answered in the negative.
“During the campaign, we will continue to promote the ideology of a ‘real Armenia’,” Rubinyan said.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also emphasized the importance of a popular decision between two alternatives.
“Citizens of Armenia must make a choice. One option is to continue the Karabakh movement and follow our respected opposition figures. The other is to embrace the logic of a ‘real Armenia’, conclude a peace agreement, and focus on building the state of our dreams. The parliamentary elections will likely take place in June 2026, but the choice must be made by the people today,” Pashinyan said.
