YEREVAN, July 1. /ARKA/. The institution of confiscation of assets of illegal origin is aimed not only at former officials but is also a crucial tool in the fight against corruption among current officials. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this at the opening ceremony of the two-day event "Armenian Platform for the European Dialogue of Prosecutors."
"I would like to take this opportunity to clarify an important misunderstanding. There is a widespread belief that the system and institution of confiscation of illegal assets are aimed at former officials. But this is a misunderstanding," Armenpress quotes Pashinyan as saying.
According to him, the mechanism of confiscation of illegal assets is one of the most important tools of the current anti-corruption policy.
"Current officials must receive a signal that illicit enrichment has no prospects, as the consequences of confiscating illegal assets must be predictable," the Prime Minister emphasized.
He noted that both society and the authorities expect more tangible results from this mechanism, but called it one of the key pillars of the government and parliamentary majority's anti-corruption policy.
At the same time, Pashinyan acknowledged that a certain stagnation has occurred in the fight against corruption.
"For me as Prime Minister, one of the most alarming facts is that we have reached a certain point of stagnation in anti-corruption policy, including in international rankings. This is truly alarming, and we simply cannot accept it," he stated.
According to the head of government, it is crucial for the authorities to ensure consistent progress in the fight against corruption, which is why the new government and parliamentary majority consider it a priority to relaunch and update the entire package of democratic reforms.
