Armenian Education Ministry and UNDP sign memorandum of understanding to teach school students human rights

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Yerevan Office and the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenian signed today a Memorandum of Understanding.
YEREVAN, July 15. / ARKA /. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Yerevan Office and the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenian signed today a Memorandum of Understanding. The document, signed by UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia Dafina Gercheva and Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan, formalizes bilateral cooperation aimed at developing a comprehensive national action program for the school system to teach human rights.

According to Ashotyan, this is a long-term program. He said earlier implemented similar projects were supported by grants and could not fill in the gap.

"We have not yet developed a long-term strategy, have not identified the shortcomings in this sphere", the minister said, adding that the new memorandum will help students get acquainted with their rights and responsibilities in the context of national and international law.

UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Dafina Gercheva said that the signing of the Memorandum is another step towards cooperation in education and expressed hope that the program will be effective.

"We are studying the educational sector, the training methods to reveal the shortcomings so that to develop an effective program," she said. -0-
