YEREVAN, October 29 /ARKA/. From October 31 to November 2 Armenia’s capital city Yerevan will be hosting an international conference on the importance of social protection , First Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Arsen Manukyan said today.

He said the conference is a joint initiative of the Armenian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the World Bank, UNICEF and the Association of Social Workers of Armenia.

Speaking at a press conference today he said Armenia cannot have a social protection system that only provides benefits, pensions or prostheses for people with disabilities.

‘We must have an inclusive system that can correctly assess a person’s needs,” said Manukyan. He said  also the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health should also get involved in addressing this problem.

UNICEF social protection program coordinator in Armenia  Armenuhi Hovakimyan said in Armenia a large number of children are still living below the poverty line.

“In Armenia, every third child is living below the poverty line and the influence this situation has on the child affects his/her childhood and inability to further develop and live a full life,” Hovakimyan said.

World Bank Program Leader for the South Caucasus countries, Europe and Central Asia Lire Ersado pointed out the low human capital index in Armenia, which is 0.57҆. In his words, this means that children on reaching the age of majority will be able to realize only 57% of their potential.

The head of the Association of Social Workers of Armenia, Mira Antonyan, touched upon the importance of having qualified personnel in the field of social protection. According to her, it will contribute to the development of social capital. -0-
