Court acquits former Armenian President Sargsyan on embezzlement charges

YEREVAN, 31 May. /ARKA/. A first instance court in Yerevan found former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan not guilty of embezzlement, the country’s Public TV Company reported on Friday.
There were three suspects in the trial: Serzh Sargsyan, accused of stealing roughly 500 million drams ($1.3 million) worth of public funds, owner of the Flash oil company Barsegh Beglaryan, accused of being complicit with Sargsyan’s alleged embezzlement, and former Agriculture Ministry official Gevorg Harutyunyan, accused of assisting Sargsyan. All three were found not guilty.
The General Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia is determined to appeal the verdict, state news agency Armenpress reported.
Sargsyan was charged with embezzlement in December 2019. The 3rd President of Armenia, he was in office between 2008 and 2018.
