YEREVAN, May 24. /ARKA/. Gagik Harutyunyan, the head of Armenia’s Supreme Judicial Council has resigned. In his statement placed on the official website of the country’s judicial authorities, Harutyunyan said that, taking into account developments related to the judicial authorities and judges and the concerns he voiced on May 20 in briefings, he found it reasonable to resign.
“I wish you further effective activity in formation of the independent judicial authorities fit for a state of law,” Harutyunyan said in his statement. “I think I will now have enough time for a more intensive activity, especially in the international professional partnership for the sake of the Armenian people.”
His resignation came amid widespread disaffection for the country’s judges and courts, which has forced Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan “to resort to surgical intervention”, as he said, to rid the justice system from corrupted judges. This means, he said, that all judges in Armenia will undergo the vetting. He also said that introduction of transitional justice mechanisms in the country is the matter of vital importance..-0---
