Preparations for a tender for reconstruction of the Republic Square in Yerevan were discussed yet two years ago, but this will be not reconstruction in the ordinary sense of the word, Kamo Areyan, the city vice-mayor, said Friday in the National Assembly at the discussion of the 2012 government budget performance.
YEREVAN, May 31. /ARKA/.
“The aim of the tender is to attract proposals to relieve traffic congestion at this section of city, to use underground areas here and to revise the architecture of the southern section of the square that used to have a monument to Lenin,” he said.
The Yerevan Municipality has announced an open architectural competition for a concept that should offer proposals to reconstruct the Republic Square in the center of the capital. The municipality said it will choose the best proposals to adapt the square to modern urban development trends.
The proposals should take into account the fact that the square has become a congested transport hub with all ensuing negative consequences. Besides, various development projects implemented close to the site have breached its dominance. The functional significance of some of the buildings has changed after the construction of North Avenue.
The competition is open to architects, creative groups and design firms. Applications will be accepted from May 29 to August 29. -0-
