Parliament to give students of vocational schools deferral from military service

YEREVAN, March 25. /ARKA/. By a vote of 112 to 2 abstentions the Parliament of Armenia has passed today in the first reading a set of amendments to the law on military service and the status of servicemen, which give conscripts the opportunity to complete their studies at vocational schools before being drafted into the army. The changes were authored by the opposition Bright Armenia party.
According to MP Anna Kostanyan, the one-time deferral will be granted until the male students reach the age of 20.
The proposal is objected by the Defense ministry. Deputy Defense Minister Arman Sargsyan said the logic of the proposal was unacceptable. He said an agreement was reached that the deferral will apply only to young men who are in the last year of their study. -0-
