YEREVAN, January 29. /ARКА/. The Board of Trustees of Yerevan State University was unable today to elect chairperson due to lack of votes.

Two candidates ran for the position of the chairperson of the Board: Haykaz Navasardyan and Karmen Khachatryan. Navasardyan received 14 votes out of 29, and Khachatryan 15. However, according to the rules, the chairperson of the Board is elected upon receiving a majority of votes; therefore one of the candidates should have received 17 votes. The election was postponed to the next meeting.

Former chairperson of the Board of Trustees Gevorg Muradyan, elected in January 22, 2019, resigned after Armenia's defeat in the Nagorno-Karabakh war.

The Yerevan State University is the oldest continuously operating public university in Armenia. Founded in 1919, it is the largest university in the country. Instruction is in Armenian, but instruction in Russian and English for foreign students is arranged according to need. The academic year is from September 1 through June 30.-0-
