Yerevan zoo has new acting director
YEREVAN, November 22. /ARКА/. Vladimir Simonyan, who served as deputy director of the Yerevan Zoo, was appointed today as its acting director. The news was announced to the zoo staff by deputy mayor of Yerevan Tigran Virabyan.

The former director Zoo Ruben Khachatryan resigned on November 1 after several incidents of death of the zoo animals.

“We should thank the former director for the excellent work he has done over the years. I would also like to note that he will continue to support the zoo with his professional experience. We consider it important that the acting director of the zoo be one of the staff and be aware of its problems. We are also confident that specialists will help prevent new problems during this transition period," Virabyan said.

Virabyan said one of the major problems is to fence the territory of the zoo and ensure its security. Another issue is to provide the staff with health insurance.

“The changes are a requirement of the time, but it does not mean that radical changes are expected. Only the people who are involved in buying and selling animals or have other interests cannot work for the zoo,” Virabyan said.

Simonyan, in turn, thanked for the trust and noted that he will use his experience for the  development of the zoo.

It was said that zoologist Iman Memaryan from the Islamic Republic of Iran was invited to Armenia, and after obtaining Armenian citizenship, will  be appointed as deputy director of the zoo. Memaryan is said to have run the Tehran Zoo for many years and collaborated with a number of international zoological organizations.

In late October and early November, a pack of stray dogs penetrated the Yerevan Zoo killing three mouflons and three kangaroos.

Over the past year, two tigers, a zebra, a bear, a bezoar goat, and a crocodile died in the zoo, reportedly of tuberculosis and leukemia. -0-
