Armenia, Georgia submit joint bid to host 2029 FIFA U20 World Cup

YEREVAN, June 5. /ARKA/. Armenia and Georgia will submit a joint bid to host the 2029 FIFA U20 World Cup, the Football Federation of Armenia announced on Wednesday.
Armen Melikbekyan and Levan Kobiashvili, the presidents of the Armenian and Georgian football federations, held a press conference where they exchanged jerseys of each other’s national teams.
Should the bid be approved by FIFA, two new stadiums are expected to be constructed in northern Armenia in addition to the projected National Stadium outside Yerevan. The current home venue for the country’s national team, the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, would also host some of the tournament’s fixtures.
FIFA U20 World Cup is held every two years and features 24 national teams as of the 2023 edition. Eligible players must be no older than 20 years of age on January 1 of the year the tournament is held. The current champions are Uruguay. While Armenia’s U20 team has never qualified for the tournament, it would have a guaranteed spot alongside Georgia should the bid be approved.
