YEREVAN, October 1. / ARKA /. Armenia is currently the strongest chess nation in the world, former world chess champion Garry Kasparov said in an interview with sobesednuk.ru.

"Judging by the results of the latest Chess Olympiad, Armenia appears to be number one chess nation. Chess in Armenia is something like football in Latin America. It is included even in school curriculum. By the way, after 2002 Russia failed to win a single Chess Olympiad. It was won three times by Armenia and two times by Ukraine ", he said.

He also praised Norwegian Magnus Carlsen as the most promising chess player in the world, who tops the list of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). "Maybe I would be able to compete with him in a blitz game, not in a serious one,” said Kasparov.

On September 9 Armenia won the gold medal at the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul. It is their third Olympic gold overall. They also finished first at the World Team Championship last year in Ningbo, China. -0-
